Yet more Horn Canyon

I just walked along the stream in order to take most of these.

This is a fungus -- probably a giant puffball.

There's a snake's head in this photo. I'm not sure what kind of snake this is -- it didn't have Gopher snake markings, and kind of reminded me of a Milk snake.

Horn Canyon again

These ants are on a fungal body that is squeezing out of a crack in a dead alder tree. The whole tree trunk was covered with this fungus.

This fungus really was this color -- a vivid shade of lilac.

Most of the trees in the stream had the soil washed away from their roots in last winter's storms.

More fungus. This type only seems to grow on oaks

Horn Canyon

Plenty of ferns in this part ofthe canyon.

Looking down into the canyon from the trail that leads to The Pines campground.

Berries of the Toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia). Hollywood, California was named after this native chapparal plant.

The rustic campground at The Pines. The trees were planted by Boy Scouts during WWII, and are not native to the area

Dog and horse water at the campground. The spring is about a quarter of a mile up a small side canyon.

What you see when you first enter the campground.

Toyon.

Looking out into the Ojai Valley.

A shady place on the trail.

The trail crosses the creek in several places. After serious storms, these crossings are impassable.

Spot and Nikki Yesterday

Nikki & Spot as kittens.
Both cats were abandoned as kittens and subsequently rescued. Spot was found wandering in heavy traffic -- her eyes were glued shut with mucous from an upper respiratory infection. Nikki was tossed through the front door of a veterinary clinic before she was able to walk. Nobody saw who abandoned either cat. Nikki is the grey one, and Spot is the white one. Spot got her name from the dark smudge on her head when she was a kitten. The smudge disappeared, but the name stuck.

The first picture I ever took of Spot. She always ran straight toward me whenever she saw me, and was hard to focus on.
7 weeks old

Nikki always slept on her back.

Backsleeper

Spot at about 20 weeks.

Nikki is polydactyl, and has large "thumbs".

This is one of the things that Nikki still does best; she weighs 18 lbs. today.

Spot and Nikki Today

Spot and Nikki today; 5 and 4 years respectively.

This is when they get along the best, although they do hang out and play together.

Who knows.......

My cross-eyed cat.

If you aren't old enough to have ever read Al Capp's "Li'l Abner" comic strip, you have no idea what a shmoo is......but they kind of look like this.
